Self-levelling screed is a pumpable cement-based compound that flows out across a floor and settles into a perfectly flat, smooth surface. It is the step most people do not think about until a floor fitter tells them their slab is out by fifteen millimetres across the room. Without a level base, resin pools unevenly, vinyl telegraphs every bump, and tiles lip at the edges.
In Malta this comes up constantly, whether it is an older property where floors have settled over decades, or a new build where the concrete slab was poured to structural rather than finishing tolerance. Getting the screed right is what makes everything laid on top of it look and perform properly.

An honest look at the advantages and the trade-offs
Best suited to: Any floor that is visibly uneven, and every project where resin, vinyl or wood is going down over an old or out-of-tolerance slab.
Step-by-step — what to expect
laser levels used to map high and low points across the floor
floor cleaned, cracks filled, edges and pipework protected
substrate sealed so the screed cures evenly instead of drying too fast
compound mixed and pumped, then spiked to release trapped air
left to set hard before any covering is installed
