Microcement bathroom walls with terrazzo floor in Malta

Microcement Malta in Malta

Microcement is a thin, trowel-applied cement coating that gives you a seamless, contemporary finish across floors, walls, stairs and even worktops. At only 2 to 3mm thick it can be applied directly over existing tiles, screed or concrete without raising floor levels, which makes it particularly useful in Maltese properties where door heights and existing thresholds cannot easily be changed.

Unlike tiles there are no grout lines to discolour, and unlike epoxy the finish is matte and tactile rather than glossy. It has become the go-to choice for renovations in Sliema and St Julian's apartments where owners want a modern, minimal look without ripping out existing floors. Every installation is carried out by our installation partner following a free site assessment.

Things To Consider

Handmade finish means slight tonal variation is normal and expected
Needs resealing every few years in heavy traffic areas
Hairline movement cracks can appear if the substrate shifts
Skilled application matters enormously, this is not a DIY product
Generally costs more per square metre than a standard epoxy system

Frequently Asked Questions

Can microcement go over existing tiles?
Yes, and this is one of its main advantages. As long as the tiles are firmly bonded and the surface is sound, we prime and apply a reinforcing layer over the grout lines before building up the microcement. No demolition and no waste removal.
Is microcement waterproof?
The sealed system is waterproof, which is why it works in bathrooms and wet rooms. In shower areas we apply a separate waterproof membrane underneath as well, so the waterproofing does not rely on the sealer alone.
Will it crack?
Microcement moves with the surface underneath it. If the substrate is stable it will not crack. Where there are existing joints or a risk of movement we use a reinforcing mesh in the base coats to spread any stress.
How is it different from epoxy?
Epoxy is a resin that cures to a hard, usually glossy film and is excellent for garages and industrial floors. Microcement is a cement-based coating with a matte, slightly textured, more natural look, and it works on walls and worktops as well as floors.
